As proud members of The American Legion Family, our conduct reflects on the entire organization—whether we’re wearing our Legion cap, branded apparel, or representing ourselves online. Social media can be a powerful tool to share our mission, engage our communities, and promote our programs. But remember: one inappropriate post can undo years of goodwill and hard work.
To help guide your online activity, please review the following best practices and cautions when using social media and representing The American Legion:
DO:
Create and manage official Facebook pages, websites, or other platforms for your Post, Squadron, or Unit.
Follow each platforms content guidelines to avoid issues.
Post regularly and consistently to keep followers informed and engaged.
Promote The American Legion, Sons of The American Legion, Auxiliary, and the programs we proudly support.
Share photos from events, community service, and member milestones.
Publicize events and opportunities for the public to support or participate.
Encourage membership by showing how to join the Legion Family.
Highlight accomplishments at all levels: local, state, and national.
Celebrate patriotic holidays, veteran observances, and moments of American pride.
Inform Department or National HQs of your online presence—they may share your content!
DON’T:
Overwhelm your audience with excessive or repetitive posts.
Share content that doesn’t align with our mission or values.
Post anything that could reflect negatively on the Legion Family.
Engage in partisan politics. The American Legion is proudly non-partisan.
Link to sites or pages that conflict with our mission.
Disrespect or defame individuals, groups, or organizations—online or offline.
Remember: When you wear the emblem—online or in person—you represent every veteran, every family, and every community we serve.
Let’s continue to lead with respect, integrity, and purpose.
