If you have a story that you'd like to submit for consideration in the next issue of Hoosier Legionnaire, send it to communications@indianalegion.org. American Legion Riders Chapter 341 in Cicero, Indiana, raised $4,400 during a ride, July 25th, to remember Luke “Mongo” Frist. Frist, a specialist, paid the ultimate sacrifice from wounds sustained by an IED while serving in Ramadi, Iraq. Event organizer Jody Brown is grateful to the post riders for honoring Frist. Approximately eighty motorcycles participated, with around 100 riders total and Brown says he “thanks everyone for their support and [I] appreciate everyone showing up. This is our second year for Mongo’s ride. Mongo was Luke Frist’s battle name and we just wanted to honor him and do this in his memory. So we decided to put on a charitable ride and we were able to raise $4,400 for the Legacy Foundation. We’re very proud to be able to do that.” Frist’s parents and sister attended the check presentation to Commander Allen Connelly at the American Legion Department of Indiana headquarters the following week after the ride. Luke’s mom, Patti Frist, says “It just means that our son is continuing to give. We appreciate the Cicero American Legion Post for allowing us to do this, and we appreciate their efforts in putting this ride together. …We’ve had a lot of his brothers and sisters [those who served with him] come back and see us. So…we’ve gained a lot of sons and daughters through this. We appreciate this. Thank you.” Brown says, “Anything we can do to support our veterans, whether it’s those living or honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice, it’s what we do. We support our community too, but most of what we do is for our veterans. We chartered as riders six years ago, and in the last five years we’ve raised between $80,000-$100,000. We feel like it’s our responsibility as veterans - not only as veterans - but Legionnaires.” |
