I’m writing to you in an uncertain time in our nation’s history as the World Health Organization has dubbed the Coronavirus a global pandemic. The health and safety of our membership is my foremost priority as our membership is the lifeblood of our great organization. That is why I have chosen to cancel the upcoming 2020 Joint Spring conference scheduled for Friday, April 3 through Sunday, April 5 at the Marriott East Hotel in Indianapolis.
For those who have made reservations through the Department American Legion Housing Block, no further action is required. Spring Conference reservations are cancelled directly by the Marriott East Hotel. If you made reservations outside of the Legion block, contact the hotel directly. If you are unsure of which reservation block you are on, contact the Marriott East Hotel to inquire and confirm cancellation at 317-352-1231.
For our 380 Posts, Units and Squadrons across the great Hoosier State, I implore you to adhere to the local guidelines set by our Governor, local elected officials and public health departments regarding closures. As of 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, Monday, March 16, 2020, the Governor has stated that all bars, nightclubs and restaurants are closed through the end of March. This does include our Legion Posts, restaurants and canteens. I have been in direct contact with the Governor’s office to ask for any economic relief from the fallout of these shutdowns and will continue to inquire.
Gov. Holcomb also announced that Indiana will adhere to the federal Centers for Disease Control guidelines which recommends no in-person events of more than 50 people. Keep in mind that our membership is mostly made up of the at-risk age demographic for Coronavirus. I expect that each of our Posts will do the right thing.
In addition the Department Commander Allen Connelly and Leading Candidate for Commander Mark Gullion’s travel calendars have been suspended through March.. This means that all previously scheduled visitation to Post and District functions are hereby cancelled for health concerns.
The Department Headquarters will continue to operate and monitor the ongoing situation. However, the doors of the Department will be closed to walk-ins as of Tuesday, March 17 and will accessible by appointment only.
